A New Semi-Active/Passive Isolator

چکیده
This paper presents a novel semi-active Variable Stiffness and Damping Isolator (VSDI) for vibration mitigation of structures. The proposed VSDI system consists of a traditional steel-rubber vibration absorber, as the passive fail-safe element, and a magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) with a controllable (or variable) stiffness and damping behavior, as the passive-active element. MRE is a type of material whose stiffness and damping properties can be altered by a magnetic field. In this study, a small scale prototype of this device is designed, fabricated and tested. A typical MRE material is implemented into the device with a built-in electromagnetic system for activation. The magnetic field of the system is numerically analyzed to show the efficiency of the design. Dynamic shear tests in passive and active state are carried out experimentally to demonstrate the VSDI’s ability in stiffness change and eventually shift in natural frequency, while at the same time in damping increment, resulting in vibration reduction.

متن کاملHierarchical semi-active control of base-isolated structures using a new inverse model of magnetorheological dampers
Magnetorheological (MR) dampers have received special attention as semi-active devices for mitigation of structural vibrations. Because of the inherent nonlinearity of these devices, it is difficult to obtain a reasonable mathematical inverse model. This paper is concerned with two related concepts. On one hand, it presents a new inverse model of MR dampers based on the normalized Bouc–Wen mode...
متن کاملModeling of a new semi-active/passive magnetorheological elastomer isolator
This paper presents theoretical modeling of a new magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) base isolator and its performance for vibration control. The elastomeric element of the traditional steel–rubber base isolator is modified to a composite layer of passive elastomer and MRE which makes the isolator controllable with respect to its stiffness and damping. The proposed variable stiffness and dampin...

This paper presents the performance of a new magnetorheological elastomer-based semi-active/passive variable stiffness and damping isolator (VSDI) in a scaled building system. The force of the VSDI can be controlled in real time by varying the applied magnetic field. To demonstrate the performance of the VSDI, four prototypes are built and utilized in a scaled three-story building. A Lyapunov-b...
